Près de cinq mois après la mort de Pelé, le mausolée de la légende du football brésilien a été inauguré dans la ville portuaire de Santos, où le “roi” Pelé a joué la plus grande partie de sa carrière en club avant d’évoluer quelque temps au New York Cosmos. “Cela a été fait avec beaucoup d’amour par des gens qui l’ont connu et qui ont vécu avec lui. Il a donc l’essence de ce qu’il était”, a déclaré le fils de Pelé, Edinho, lors de l’inauguration de la salle dans la tour du cimetière “Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica”, comme l’a rapporté le portail d’information brésilien “G1”. “C’est très noble, très simple et très agréable”.

Pelé est décédé le 29 décembre 2022 d’un cancer à l’âge de 82 ans. Après un deuil national de trois jours et une veillée funèbre de 24 heures dans le stade de son club de longue date, le FC Santos, le triple champion du monde a été enterré le 3 janvier.

Deux statues dorées accueillent désormais les visiteurs dans le mausolée, dont le sol est recouvert de gazon synthétique et dont les murs sont ornés de spectateurs de Santos en liesse. Des moments importants de la carrière de Pelé y sont également représentés. Le tombeau a été conçu par l’entrepreneur argentin José Salomon Altstut, décédé en 2018. Les fans qui souhaitent le visiter peuvent s’inscrire gratuitement sur le site Internet du cimetière.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, le nom complet de l’attaquant, a marqué le football comme peu d’autres et était déjà une légende de son vivant. La Fédération internationale de football (FIFA) avait élu le Brésilien – tout comme l’Argentin Diego Maradona – “joueur du XXe siècle”. En 92 matches internationaux, Pelé a marqué 77 buts pour l’équipe nationale de football brésilienne. Il est le seul joueur de l’histoire à avoir rempoté trois Coupes du monde de football (1958, 1962 et 1970).
